Add Line Numbers

Prefix every line of text with sequential line numbers.

Numbered lines make text referenceable: "see line 42" beats "the part about halfway down". Code snippets for documentation, legal drafts, transcripts, and log excerpts all read better with explicit numbering — but adding numbers by hand doesn't survive the first edit.

Paste any text and this tool prefixes each line with a sequential, right-aligned number. The padding adjusts automatically to the total line count so columns stay aligned from line 1 to line 9,999.

How to use Add Line Numbers

Numbers are padded so they align in a column.

Numbered text is ready to paste anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Numbering text that will be edited afterwards — add numbers as the last step.
  • Using numbered text where the target system adds its own numbering, doubling the numbers.
