Editorial policy & methodology
People use our calculators to make real decisions about their pay, debt, homes and health. This page explains how we try to earn that trust.
1. Research
Before building a calculator we identify the authoritative source for every number and formula it uses — for example IRS revenue procedures for tax brackets, SSA announcements for the Social Security wage base, state agencies for disability and paid-leave rates, and peer-reviewed studies for medical conversions. Where official sources disagree or data is unavailable, we say so on the page.
2. Build and test
- Each formula is implemented once and reused, so the worked examples in the article and the interactive calculator always give the same answer.
- We test every calculator against hand-worked examples and, where available, against official worksheets or published tables.
- We test edge cases: zero and very large values, leap years, overnight shifts, income above wage caps, and invalid inputs.
3. Explain
Every calculator page includes the formula, a worked example, the assumptions the calculator makes, and answers to common questions. We write in plain English and avoid jargon where possible.
4. Review and update
We review each page at least once a year and whenever an underlying figure changes (for example new tax brackets each January, or mid-year state law changes). The "Updated" date at the top of each page shows when it was last reviewed. Current review date: September 26, 2026.
5. Corrections
If you find an error, please tell us. We investigate every report, fix confirmed errors promptly, and update the review date.
6. Advertising and independence
The site is supported by display advertising from Google AdSense. Ads are clearly labeled "Advertisement" and are kept visually separate from calculators and results. Advertisers have no influence over our calculations, content or recommendations, and we do not accept payment to feature products.
7. Limits of our calculators
Our results are estimates for educational purposes. They are not tax, legal, investment or medical advice. Individual circumstances vary; please confirm important decisions with a qualified professional. See our disclaimer.
