Scientific notation compresses very large and very small numbers into a manageable form: the mass of an electron is 9.109 × 10⁻³¹ kg, far easier to read and compute with than thirty leading zeros. Scientists, engineers and students move between this and standard form constantly, and miscounting the exponent is a classic, costly slip.
